Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card Application Guide: How to Apply Online

A PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identity issued by the Income Tax Department of India. Beyond being a primary identity proof, it is a mandatory requirement for significant financial activities such as opening a bank account, filing income tax returns, investing in the stock market, or purchasing high-value assets.

  • You should apply for a PAN card if you are an individual earning a taxable income or if you plan to engage in financial transactions where quoting a PAN is legal necessity. It is also highly recommended for students and young professionals to have it as a valid government-issued ID for various official registrations.
  • Step 1 : Visit the Portal: Go to the official Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL website.
  • Step 2 : Select Application Type: Choose "New PAN - Indian Citizen (Form 49A)."
  • Step 3 : Fill the Form: Enter your personal details, including name, mobile number, and email.
  • Step 4 : Verification: Choose between physical document submission or the digital e-KYC method (Aadhaar-based).
  • Step 5 : Payment: Pay the processing fee using a credit/debit card, net banking, or UPI.
  • Step 6 : Acknowledgement: Once submitted, save the 15-digit acknowledgement number to track your delivery status.
  • If your existing PAN card has incorrect details or if your surname has changed, you can use the "Changes or Correction in PAN Data" service. You will need to provide valid documentary evidence for the specific correction you are requesting, and a updated card will be dispatched to your registered address.

To complete the application, you will generally need the following:

  • Proof of Identity: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License.
  • Proof of Address: Utility bills (Electricity/Water), Aadhaar Card, or Bank Statement.
  • Proof of Date of Birth: Birth Certificate, Matriculation Certificate, or Aadhaar.
  • Photographs: Two recent passport-sized color photographs (required for physical applications).

E-PAN Validity: An e-PAN (Electronic PAN) is a digitally signed document and is considered a valid proof of PAN everywhere.

Aadhaar Linking: Ensure your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar for a completely paperless and instant application process.

Avoid Duplicates: Holding more than one PAN card is illegal and can lead to a penalty under the Income Tax Act.
